Pulmonary Fibrosis is a disease that affects 1 out of 200 adults over the age of 65 in the United States (PFF article). In fact, there are 100,000 people living with IPF in the United States alone. Those with Pulmonary Fibrosis experience a hardening and scarring of the tissue in their lungs.
In some instances, doctors are able to determine the cause of this fibrosis, in many instances, no specific cause can be identified. These cases of fibrosis with unknown causes are collectively labeled as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a disease that has ravaged people for far too long. (NIH article)
Those with IPF may eventually experience respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, and pneumonia (NIH). After diagnosis, average life expectancy of those with IPF is only 3.8 years, resulting in the death of 40,000 Americans annually. (PFF article). Surprisingly, these totals are comparable to the number of those affected by breast cancer (PRN newswire article). That’s why Three Lakes Partners has made it their mission to eradicate IPF in its entirety.
